I met Doug Stewart in high school in 1954 shortly after each of us had come to know Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. The friendship we have enjoyed for over 66 years has been a great joy and source of blessing. After graduating from Davidson College with honors, Doug began working with Intervarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF), an organization which seeks to reach university students for Christ. He then met and married Marilyn and they continued this work together with IVCF to bring the message of Jesus Christ to students on university and college campuses. The following is a description of their ministry:
For the past 50 years we have been serving the Lord with Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students, (the international organization of which IVCF is a part).
After four years in IV staff in Florida, we spent 27 years in Latin America, Bolivia, Argentina, and then in Mexico. Most of those years were dedicated to raising up national student movements in universities, dedicated to bearing witness to Christ among classmates, developing life-long followers of Jesus, and helping students find God’s purpose for their lives. The latter years in Latin America were dedicated to pastoral care of younger national staff workers, Also, Marilyn was used by God to raise up Bible study groups for evangelism and discipleship among women in Mexico.
For the last 20 years we have been back in the US first serving in the national leadership of IVCF as a national field director, and then for the last 10 years, we have served in the national movement in the area of spiritual formation for our staff, seeking to help them stay rooted in Christ and grow in Him. Marilyn also serves as a chaplain for the national campus ministry leadership team of Intervarsity. Both of us serve as spiritual directors and meet with individuals to assist them in their walk with God.
In 2011 Doug and Marilyn retired. They enjoyed retirement for about six years, then sadly Marilyn was stricken with melanoma brain cancer in October 2017. She remained ill for about a year before she died. Doug continues to live near Wheaton, Ill close to his three daughters and their families.
Doug shares his Testimony with us in the “Testimonies” section under “Main Articles.” Also, several of Doug’s articles are presented in “The Christian Life” section. I believe you will be blessed and enriched by reading the thoughts and meditations of this devoted servant of God.
